By: Christine Loxley

Are you one of those people who cringes every time the heating bill comes in the mail? Energy costs aren?t going down much any time soon so there are only a couple of things you can do to lower your blood pressure at bill time. The first option is not to open the bill. The more practical option is to find ways to use less energy in the first place.

In the past we were brought up to conserve energy by turning out lights, closing the doors and being satisfied with a lower temperature in the cold months. Nowadays manufacturers are coming up with things that can be considered preemptive strikes against energy consumption.

To do this the homeowner has to find the places where heat is escaping their home. This isn?t all that hard to do because, really, the heat is seeping out from every opening the house has. What does this include? Primarily your doors and windows. With doors people just need to make sure the door is mounted flush. With windows things become a bit trickier.

Old fashioned windows, and even a lot of modern windows, don?t actually accomplish much more than letting people look outside. From the frame to the seal to the glass itself, heat can easily escape through the windows. What does that mean to the homeowner? It means they?ll have to use even more energy to replace that heat.

Replacing old windows isn?t all that hard. This is especially true if you select window that are the same size as the old ones. What the consumer needs to do is find a window product that has a high energy star rating because that tells us just how efficient they are.

The cost of buying and installing new windows will no doubt be expensive. Keep in mind though that this is a one time cost. Once your home is outfitted with energy efficient windows you?ll find that your heating bill goes down. That is something that will keep on paying.
